Segment 2: In 1963, President John F. Kennedy founded the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. He wanted to ensure the nation and especially the nation’s youth were healthy and fit. He enlisted the aid of author and composer Meredith Wilson to write a song that would inspire the youth to exercise. Wilson wrote the Chicken Fat Exercise Kids, a peppy, trombone-rich marching song. Robert Preston, the actor in The Music Man, recorded the lyrics.
Scott Drayer bought the rights to produce an exercise video in the 1990s and recently turned the lyrics into a book.
